Taking Ownership of Your Website

Goal: Understand exactly what needs to be transferred.

What you will learn

  • The ten pieces that make up “owning” a website
  • Why each piece needs to be confirmed separately
  • How to track the handoff with your developer
  • What never to cancel or delete too early

Owning a website is a bundle, not a single thing

Imagine buying a house. You get the deed, but you also need to switch over the electricity, water, internet and the mailbox key. Each one is a separate phone call.

Your website is the same. Here are the pieces you and your developer should talk through.

Project
Domain
Hosting
Billing
Data
Forms
Bookings
Payments
Analytics
Other services

The pieces to check

  1. 1Project ownership and workspace permissions: whose workspace is the project in, and what can you do?
  2. 2Domain ownership: whose account is the domain registered in, and when does it renew?
  3. 3Hosting and deployment: where is the live website served from, and who can publish?
  4. 4Subscription and billing: who pays for Lovable, and on what card?
  5. 5Database and storage (if your site saves information): where does it live and who can access it?
  6. 6Forms: when someone fills in your contact form, whose inbox gets the message?
  7. 7Booking systems: which account manages your calendar or appointments?
  8. 8Payment integrations: whose bank account receives the money?
  9. 9Analytics: who can see visitor numbers?
  10. 10Third-party services: email tools, newsletters, maps, chat widgets, and any other connected accounts.

Some transfers need technical work

Depending on how your website was built, moving it to you may require a project transfer, a workspace change, publishing again from the new account, or reconnecting the domain. None of these happen automatically.

Your developer should confirm the exact steps for your website using the current official documentation.

Important: Never delete the original project or cancel any subscription until the new setup has been tested and confirmed working on the live website.

Verify in your Lovable account

Moving a project to another workspace depends on your plan and permissions. Verify in your Lovable account.

Common mistakes

Cancelling the developer’s subscription before your setup is confirmed.

Keep everything running until your new setup is tested end to end.

Forgetting about the domain.

Ask exactly whose account holds the domain and when it renews. Write it down.

Not testing the contact form after the handoff.

Send yourself a test message and confirm it arrives in your inbox.
