Making Your First Website Change

Goal: Successfully edit website text.

What you will learn

  • The seven steps of every safe website change
  • How to write a clear instruction (a “prompt”)
  • Why you should say what NOT to change
  • How to confirm the change on the live website

The seven safe steps

Every change you ever make follows the same rhythm. Learn it once and you can use it forever.

  1. 1Open the correct project. Double-check the name if you have more than one.
  2. 2Identify exactly what needs to change: which page, which words.
  3. 3Write a clear instruction to Lovable in the chat.
  4. 4Read what Lovable says it changed.
  5. 5Look at the preview to see the result. Check it on a phone-sized view too.
  6. 6Publish when you are happy.
  7. 7Open your real website address and confirm the change is there.

What makes a great prompt

A prompt is simply the message you type to Lovable. Great prompts answer three questions: Where? What? What should stay the same?

Copy the exact words you see on your website when you can. That way Lovable knows precisely which text you mean.

Example prompt

On my homepage, change the heading ‘Welcome to My Website’ to ‘Helping You Live Your Best Life.’ Keep everything else exactly the same.

Always say what NOT to change

AI helpers are eager. If you only say “make the heading better,” Lovable might also adjust fonts, spacing or nearby text.

Adding “Keep everything else exactly the same” is like telling a hairdresser “just a trim.” It sets a clear boundary.

Practice activity

Write your own prompt

Fill in the blanks and watch your prompt build itself. Then copy it to use in Lovable.

Common mistakes

Vague instructions like “make it look nicer.”

Name the page, the exact text, and the exact new text.

Asking for many unrelated changes in one message.

Make one change at a time so it is easy to check and easy to undo.

Forgetting to publish, then wondering why nothing changed.

Preview, publish, then check the live website.
